Cobbles are common to the Sacramento area as the rivers have effectivley tumbled the rocks down from the mountains over thousands
of years. Cobbles are seen in the dredger tailings along the highway 50 corridor from Rancho Cordova to Folsom.
Cobbles are unique
to the rivers that spawn them. Colors and textures are varied. Local cobbles from the American River are mostly light gray in color
with a smooth surface.
Other rivers in the region produce colors prized for decorative landscape applications.
Common sizes
available range from 3" to 14". Smaller then 3" are commonly called gravel.
Most gravel processors seperate the 3"- 6" (small
cobble) then 6"- 8" (medium cobble) and oversize as 8" plus. (large cobble)
